DE HIRSH MARGULES

Color Mood

Born in Romania, De Hirsh Margules moved with his family to New York City when he was only ten months old. His father was a director and playwright for a Yiddish theater troupe, and his mother was an actress. Margules studied art and worked nights as a police beat reporter for the City News Association of New York, a job he held until 1942.

In Color Mood, Margules presents a rich, colorful Northeastern harbor scene, likely Gloucester, Massachusetts, using deep hues of pink, red, blue, purple, and black. He provides a view of the piers, wharves, docks, boats, and houses of the coastal town. The white of the paper defines rock walls, a car, windows, and a sail. Utilizing a powerful sunrise sky, Margules creates a vibrant mood for an active morning in this harbor village.
