Gregorio Prestopino

Newspapers

Gregorio Prestopino’s brand of social realism is more romantic than that of his contemporaries. His working-class subjects may be weary and downtrodden, but they remain optimistic, even in the grim, industrial environment of Newspapers. Dwarfed in size and status by a looming industrial complex, three men take a brief pause from their duties to catch up on the day’s news. Their delivery trucks serve as windbreaks and barriers from the prying eyes of their supervisors. While two of the men read, the third scans the horizon as a lookout. With strong verticals and deep tones applied equally to men and buildings, Prestopino implies a mutually dependent relationship between the complex and its workers. These men rely entirely upon industry for their livelihood, but they will not let that fact ruin their brief respite.
